The price is for the pair of Chairs
A striking pair of 1960s spindle-back armchairs by Lubis Furniture, with the light, expressive timber framework that makes these chairs so distinctive. Sweeping curved back rails, fine vertical spindles, splayed legs and long, gently shaped armrests give the chairs an elegant profile, with just as much interest from the back as from the front.
The design shares a clear visual language with the celebrated Ercol spindle back furniture produced internationally during the same period. Here, the slender oak and elm framework remains the defining feature, with the generous sweep of the back rail and flared arms bringing warmth and character to the design.
For the upholstery, we kept the treatment simple so that the spindle work remains visible. Each chair has a newly upholstered, generously cushioned seat in a luxurious plum | merlot coloured Hertex fabric, paired with a large loose back scatter cushion in a contrasting textured weave. The scatter fabric brings together subtle specks of paprika, plum, merlot and cream white, while contrasting piping around both the seat and scatter cushion ties the two fabrics together and adds a considered finishing detail.
Comfortable without losing the lightness of the original design, these chairs work equally well as statement occasional chairs, reading chairs or as part of a larger lounge setting. A wonderful combination of sculptural timber work, texture and rich colour, and a distinctive example of South African 1960s furniture design.
A matching two-seater Lubis couch, shown in some of the photographs, makes a great set with the armchairs, and is sold separately here.
Condition:
The timber frame has been fully restored, stripped and refinished to bring back its warm, natural tone and grain, before being protected with a non-yellowing sealant. Structural work was also undertaken where required, ensuring the chair is sturdy and ready to be enjoyed again. New fabric and upholstered cushioning were added.

Note/Disclaimer:
Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.
