A striking 1960s two seater spindle back couch by Lubis Furniture, combining a generous seat with the light, finely worked timber framework characteristic of the maker. The sweeping curved back rail, closely spaced vertical spindles, splayed legs and long, gently shaped armrests create an elegant profile, while the open construction gives the couch just as much presence when viewed from the back.
The design shares a clear visual language with the celebrated Ercol spindle back furniture produced internationally during the same period. The slender oak and elm framework is very much the feature here, particularly the broad sweep of the back rail and the way the spindles follow the curved form of the frame.
The couch has been newly upholstered with a generously cushioned bench seat in a luxurious plum | merlot coloured Hertex fabric. Two scatter cushions form the backrest, upholstered in a contrasting textured Hertex weave with subtle specks of paprika, plum, merlot and cream. Contrasting piping around the seat cushion brings the two fabrics together and adds a considered finishing detail without distracting from the timber frame.
Comfortable and surprisingly spacious for its light proportions, this is an easy two-seater for a lounge, reading area or smaller living space. A wonderful combination of sculptural timber work, texture and rich colour, and a distinctive example of South African 1960s furniture design.

Condition:
The timber frame has been fully restored, stripped and refinished to bring back its warm, natural tone and grain, before being protected with a non-yellowing sealant. Structural work was also undertaken where required, ensuring the chair is sturdy and ready to be enjoyed again. New fabric and upholstered cushioning were added.
