A distinctive vintage Kokuyo Home Cabinet, an iconic example of Showa-era Japanese office design by Kokuyo Co., Ltd. Originally introduced in 1966, this innovative desktop filing cabinet was recognised with Japan’s prestigious Good Design Award, celebrating its clever combination of everyday functionality and refined industrial styling.
With its retro aesthetic, the cabinet features a contrasting chocolate brown and beige plastic body, complemented by a sleek metallic front panel bearing the original Kokuyo branding and elegant pink Home Cabinet script. The ribbed, shutter-style tambour lid retracts smoothly to reveal an interior designed for organised storage, while the lockable front provides added security.
Inside, the cabinet features a practical arrangement of compartments and shelves for stationery, documents and smaller essentials, together with its original-style hanging filing system.
Note: The cabinet comfortably accommodates A5-sized paper and documents but is not suitable for A4 filing.
Built with the durability and thoughtful detailing associated with Japanese manufacturing of the period, these compact storage cabinets have become sought-after pieces among collectors of vintage Japanese design. Equally appealing as a functional desk organiser or a characterful retro accessory for a home office or creative space.
Condition:
Cleaned, as-is vintage condition, with age-related marks and signs of wear consistent with its history. The cabinet is functional, with its shutter mechanism and lock in working order, and comes complete with its key.

Note/Disclaimer:
Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.
