An iconic pair of vintage “Barcelona” chairs that exudes simple elegance. These chairs were originally designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and manufactured by Knoll Inc. They are so legendary that they are still being manufactured to this day. These Barcelona chairs are good replicas, with no visible welding marks, etc.

Effortlessly embodies modern design and exceptional craftsmanship. The seat and backrest, paired with the cushions, provide great comfort and support. Great to add to a lounge area. The perfect timeless piece that is sure to stick with you through the years!

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was a German-American architect and furniture designer. He was commonly referred to as Mies.

Work done & Condition:

A considered and carefully executed restoration of a vintage pair of Barcelona-style chairs, where effort, material choice, and structural integrity were all approached with intent.

The chairs have been reupholstered in a warm tan vinyl sourced from Hertex, a durable, high-quality material that contains a percentage of genuine leather. In order to achieve a cohesive and unified finish between the cushions and support structure, the decision was made to rework the strapping to match in tone.

Note - This process proved technically demanding. The original seat straps were retained and carefully wrapped in the same vinyl to ensure visual consistency. To the backrest, doubled jute webbing was added, then wrapped and stitched in vinyl, resulting in a very strong and stable support system. While this method differs from the more rigid appearance of traditional thick leather straps, it offers reliable structure and longevity.

All original pop-riveted studs were removed and refitted, ensuring the integrity of the build throughout. The chromed frames remain in very good vintage condition, and the chairs themselves carry a reassuring weight that speaks to their solid construction.

It is worth noting that, in hindsight, a more traditional approach using contrasting black leather straps and cushions may have delivered a more structured, classic outcome. However, the chosen route was driven by a desire for tonal continuity, and the result is a cohesive and well-resolved pair.

Importantly, any stitching related to the strapping is discreet and only visible when cushions are removed. In everyday use, the chairs present cleanly and confidently, with an overall look that reads well within a space.

For those not based in Gauteng, we would recommend arranging for someone to view the chairs in person on your behalf to ensure complete confidence in your purchase. While we aim to represent each piece as accurately and transparently as possible, photographs can at times differ slightly from what the eye perceives in person.

A distinctive pair, thoughtfully restored, not entirely as first envisioned, but structurally sound, presents well and is ready for continued use. Minor marks on the chromed bases, but overall good condition. Priced accordingly.

Note/Disclaimer:

Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.
