A rare and exceptional 1960s teak sideboard by A.H. McIntosh of Kirkcaldy, Scotland.
This is not one of the McIntosh designs that regularly appears on the vintage market. Beautifully proportioned, the sideboard has a distinctly Scandinavian influence, with a clean, minimalist façade that allows the warmth and grain of the teak to take centre stage. The slimline cupboard handles and discreet, hidden drawer pulls keep the profile exceptionally streamlined.
Storage is cleverly arranged across the full length of the piece. At the centre is a drop-down drinks cabinet with a slide-out serving tray, creating a dedicated space for bottles, glassware and entertaining. Two generous shelved cupboards flank this, while three equally sized drawers run across the upper section, providing practical storage without interrupting the simplicity of the design.
The teak has developed a rich tone and depth of grain that comes with age, and after a full restoration, gives the sideboard warmth while retaining the crisp, modern lines for which McIntosh furniture is so sought after.
Founded in Kirkcaldy, Fife, in 1869 by Alexander Henry McIntosh, A.H. McIntosh & Co. became one of Scotland's most recognised furniture manufacturers. Although much of its post-war furniture carries a strong Danish Modern influence, McIntosh remained proudly Scottish, employing skilled local cabinetmakers and combining traditional furniture making with the increasingly progressive design language of the 1950s and 1960s.
Designer Tom Robertson, who joined the company in 1948 and later became its head designer, was responsible for many of the firm's best-known pieces, including the celebrated Dunvegan sideboard, which has been found a few times in SA.
This particular sideboard is an unusually scarce McIntosh design and the first example of this model we have had in our store. With its dedicated drinks cabinet, slide-out serving surface, substantial storage and remarkably pared-back detailing, it is as practical as it is striking.
A rare find from one of Britain's most collectible furniture manufacturers, and an outstanding statement sideboard for anyone looking for something beyond the more commonly seen McIntosh models.
Condition:
The sideboard has been fully restored and is in very good restored condition, now structurally sound and ready for everyday use. As with any original piece of this age, some minor evidence of repairs may be slightly visible here and there, forming part of its history rather than detracting from the overall presentation. Incredible how these pieces can look after a good traditional restoration. The original underlay in the cutlery drawer is still present and shows visible wear consistent with use. While we initially wanted to retain this original detail, we will most likely replace it for a cleaner finish.
