Set of two spindle back armchairs. The overall form and spindle back detailing closely echo the celebrated Ercol designs produced abroad during the same period, highlighting a shared mid-century design language rooted in craftsmanship and proportion. These are in all probability, made by Lubis Furniture and are a confident and characterful example of South African mid-century craftsmanship.
Produced during the 1960s, these chairs reflect Lubis’s ability to balance elegant form with everyday comfort, drawing on classic spindle back traditions while maintaining a distinctly local identity.
The chairs feature well-proportioned frames with gently curved backrests, slender spindles, and softly angled arms that create a relaxed yet architectural presence. The solid oak & Beechwood construction gives the set warmth and integrity, while the exposed framework allows the quality of the joinery and turning to be appreciated from every angle.
Both frames have been fully restored, carefully stripped of their darker stain to reveal the natural grain and tone of the oak, and resealed using a non-yellowing sealant to preserve the honest materiality of the wood. Structural enhancements have been completed to ensure the chairs are sound, comfortable, and ready for daily use.
In a considered update to the original design language, the chairs are upholstered with a newly fitted seat cushion and a loose scatter cushion. This approach lightens the overall look while keeping the spindle back visually prominent.
The upholstery is finished in a striking black and white textured fabric from Hertex, whose graphic pattern creates the illusion of a maze, adding depth, movement, and a contemporary edge to the otherwise classic form.
Together, this pair offers a refined blend of heritage craftsmanship and modern styling. Equally suited to a living area, reading nook, or statement corner, these Lubis armchairs celebrate South African design at its most timeless and adaptable.
