A wonderful example of Finnish glass design, this Flora bowl set was designed by Oiva Toikka in 1966, originally for the historic Nuutajärvi glassworks and later produced under Iittala. The Flora series remained in production in various forms for many years and became one of Toikka’s best-known early tableware designs.
The set comprises one large serving bowl and three smaller bowls, all in clear glass. Each is decorated with Flora’s distinctive raised relief pattern of stylised flowers, leaves, berries and plant forms. The decoration wraps around the sides and continues across the base, giving the glass a wonderfully tactile quality and allowing the pattern to catch and refract the light.
Despite the abundance of detail, the simple cylindrical forms keep the pieces distinctly Scandinavian in character. The large bowl works particularly well for salads, fruit, or serving, while the three smaller bowls are ideal for individual portions, snacks, or desserts. Together they also make a striking display set.
The Finnish artist and designer Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) joined Nuutajärvi in 1963 and went on to become one of Finland’s most recognised glass designers. Flora followed his highly successful Kastehelmi collection and was introduced in 1966, combining functional tableware with Toikka’s playful and expressive approach to surface decoration.
Condition:
Presented in good vintage condition, with light signs of previous use consistent with age. The clear glass presents well, and the wonderfully detailed Flora relief remains crisp and prominent throughout.
