A wonderful example of South African furniture design, with details that make this particular Novocraft suite a little more special than the usual.
A remarkable and less commonly found dining suite by Novocraft, one of South Africa's well-known furniture manufacturers of the mid-century period. This particular design is not one we see very often, with its unusual chair construction and expressive solid Kiaat table base & legs.
The six dining chairs are especially appealing. Their solid Kiaat frames feature distinctive cutaway detailing along the sides, creating an interesting transition between the seat and backrest. Viewed from the front, the gently curved timber beneath the seats adds another lovely design detail, while the broad upholstered backrests give the chairs a comfortable and inviting appearance.
The chairs have been fully restored and newly upholstered in a warm, neutral off-white textured fabric by Hertex. The soft texture and lighter colour provide a lovely contrast to the rich tones of the Kiaat, allowing the wood and the design to stand out.
The extendable dining table is just as special. Its central pedestal rests on a beautifully shaped cross base, with gently angled supports and substantial squared feet. The exceptionally expressive Kiaat grain is particularly noticeable along the base, adding another dimension to its unusual design.
Beyond its visual appeal, the central pedestal construction is practical, allowing additional chairs to be accommodated without conventional corner legs getting in the way when the table is extended.
The chairs are less than R3700 per chair and the table less than R12500, making this excellent value for practically a new set.
Condition:
The tabletop has been newly finished in Etimoe wood veneer, carefully selected to complement the original Kiaat. Etimoe is an excellent match for Kiaat furniture, sharing similar warm reddish-brown tones and natural grain variation that blend comfortably with the original timber.

Note: As with many furniture pieces from this era, this item combines solid wood and natural wood veneer. Veneering has a long and respected tradition in fine furniture making, valued for its beauty, stability and craftsmanship. When well-made and in fair condition, original veneer can be restored and refinished, although this requires considerable skill and care.
