A beautifully resolved Novocraft dining suite for six, showcasing the restrained elegance and refined craftsmanship that defined some of South Africa’s most considered furniture production during the 1950s and 1960s.
The set consists of a sleek rectangular dining table paired with six sculptural ladder-back dining chairs, all executed in richly toned wood with softly tapered legs and beautifully balanced proportions.
The chairs are particularly striking, with their gently curved upper rail and three shaped ladderback slats creating a subtle rhythm across the backrests and a complete sense of openness. Newly upholstered seats in a textured charcoal/grey/ midnight Hertex fabric, introducing a calm contemporary contrast against the warmth of the timber.
Slim yet sturdy, the frames carry an effortless lightness while still feeling grounded and exceptionally well-made.
The dining table follows the same understated design language, with slender tapered legs and a softly profiled edge detail that gives the top a lighter visual presence. Its proportions make it versatile and easy to place, equally suited to modern interiors or more layered vintage spaces.
Novocraft was a South African furniture manufacturer active during the mid century period, recognised for producing high-quality modernist furniture with Scandinavian influence adapted to local craftsmanship and materials.
Though sold as a set, for context, the table works out to around R10900 and the chairs to R3450 each. A reasonable price-point for this refined & fully restored set.
