A highly sought-after and increasingly hard-to-find "Dane" sideboard by Frystark, one of South Africa’s most respected mid-century furniture manufacturers, celebrated for its quality craftsmanship and considered modernist design language.
This sideboard is from Frystark’s Danish-influenced “Dane” collection, produced in South Africa during the 1960s. Designed with versatility in mind, the piece works beautifully either against a wall or as a freestanding room divider, with a fully finished rear profile that allows it to be appreciated from every angle.
Produced during the 1960s, this particular piece beautifully captures the clean geometry and sculptural restraint Frystark became known for.
Crafted in richly toned Sapele Mahogany, the sideboard presents with elegant proportions, raised on finely tapered legs and anchored by a striking stretcher detail below, featuring the subtle elongated cut-out form so often associated with better South African modernist furniture of the period.
The warm grain is complemented by sculpted recessed pulls, allowing the silhouette to remain uninterrupted and beautifully streamlined.
Functionality has been thoughtfully integrated throughout. To the right, a bank of four drawers offers generous storage, including a lockable top drawer with its original felt-lined cutlery organiser still intact. Behind the three cabinet doors, ample shelving provides versatile concealed storage for dining, lounge, or entertainment use.
A standout feature is the original drinks compartment, complete with its pull-out serving surface finished in white Formica, designed specifically for preparing and serving drinks without concern for moisture or spills. Internally, the fitted cut-out shelving offers dedicated bottle and glass storage, while the drop-down serving door creates an instant drinks station, adding both practicality and theatre to entertaining.
An exceptionally desirable format, balancing generous storage with refined proportions, this Frystark sideboard remains as functional today as it is visually striking.

Condition:
Fully restored with care and structurally sound. This piece had been stained nearly black originally, which has influenced the final tone of the timber. While restored to the best of our ability, it presents in a deeper, richer tone, lending it a moodier warmth and distinctive presence. Subtle traces of age and patina may still be visible in areas, particularly where the original dark finish had penetrated the grain, all in keeping with its vintage nature and authentic character.

Great restored condition with all internal shelving and accessories intact.
