A design that stands apart from conventional dining furniture, with its unusual shapes, rich timber tones, and striking Danish Modern influences.
South African Mid-Century Imbuia Dining Set with Danish Klismos Influences.
An exceptional Mid-Century dining set comprising four distinctive chairs and a round table, crafted in Imbuia.
The chairs are undoubtedly the highlight of this set. Their beautifully shaped solid seats, curved backrests with decorative brass studs, and distinctive turned front supports create an almost sculptural appearance. The combination of flowing curves and carefully considered proportions gives these chairs a character entirely their own.
Interestingly, we discovered a remarkably similar pair of Danish walnut Klismos Chairs, circa 1960, documented by Lorfords Antiques in the UK. The resemblance is particularly striking in the curved backrests, decorative studs, and unusual seat profiles. The design also draws comparisons to Finn Juhl's celebrated Bwana Chair, with its organic forms and expressive use of timber. There are subtle influences of Brazilian Modern design as well.
Although this set was manufactured in South Africa, its maker remains unknown. The strong Scandinavian influences make it a fascinating example of how international furniture design inspired local craftsmanship during the Mid-Century period. Many sources point to EE Meyer, but this is unconfirmed.
The accompanying round dining table, with its generous circular top and rich Imbuia finish, complements the unusual character of the chairs.
We have been fortunate enough to source this particular design before, but these sets are few and far between. An incredibly distinctive dining set that brings together craftsmanship, individuality and timeless design.

Note: As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
