A sculptural and highly recognisable piece of South African functional art, this original Carrol Boyes magazine rack transforms everyday storage into something quietly expressive. Cast in pewter toned aluminium and paired with a rich brown leather sling, the design features Boyes’ signature stylised human forms, appearing to stretch outward as though physically supporting the suspended leather body between them.

Designed with the unmistakable figurative language that made Carrol Boyes internationally collectible, this model is commonly referred to as the “Man” magazine holder and was produced during the brand’s earlier years, most notably from the late 1990s into the early 2000s, when Carrol Boyes homeware was becoming a defining part of South African contemporary design.

Founded by South African artist and sculptor Carrol Boyes, the brand emerged in 1989 and became celebrated for blending sculpture with everyday functionality, often drawing inspiration from the human form, movement, and storytelling through objects.

Condition:

In very good vintage condition, with the leather sling presenting beautifully and light age related patina to the pewter toned frame, consistent with age and use.

Note/Disclaimer:

Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.

Items are wrapped and prepared for transport by us (not the courier) to ensure safe handling. Once items leave our premises, they are no longer insured. We recommend arranging goods-in-transit insurance through your own short-term insurer.

Due to the fragility of glass, we do not recommend shipping such items outside Gauteng. Please refer to our Shipping Policy for more information: https://retrend.co.za/policies/shipping-policy
