A classic Lubis rocking chair, crafted in solid oak and dating from the 1960s. With its tall spindle back, gently shaped crest rail, sculpted wooden seat, and sweeping armrests, the chair has a light, elegant profile while retaining the sturdy construction associated with Lubis furniture.
Manufactured in South Africa, the design clearly draws inspiration from the celebrated Ercol spindle-back furniture being produced internationally during the same period. Lubis created its own locally made interpretation of this distinctive style, combining slender turned spindles, softly tapered supports and curved rocking rails to create a chair that looks equally good from every angle.
The generous high back and shaped seat make it a comfortable and practical rocker, while the exposed timber construction gives the piece plenty of character without feeling heavy. No longer in production, these Lubis designs have become increasingly sought-after examples of South African vintage furniture.
Condition:
The wood has been fully restored, stripped, sanded and resealed to bring out the natural tone and grain of the timber. The chair is in good restored vintage condition.
