A highly versatile Kiaat room divider, attributed to South African furniture maker Kallenbach. Designed to be appreciated from both sides, the open, staggered construction makes it particularly effective as a room divider while offering generous display and storage space.
The angular arrangement of open compartments, shelves and contrasting vertical supports gives the piece a strong geometric character, with elements of both Cubist and Brutalist design. Fine craftsmanship is evident throughout, particularly in the exposed dovetailed joints that become a decorative feature in their own right.
The second tier incorporates sliding glass doors, creating an enclosed display section while maintaining the open feel of the overall design. The combination of glass, open shelving and richly figured Kiaat makes the piece equally suited as a drinks cabinet, bookshelf, display unit or freestanding room divider. Double-sided access also allows it to divide a larger living or dining space without creating a visually heavy barrier.
The warm tones and distinctive grain of the Kiaat work particularly well with the clean, geometric form, giving the piece a timeless quality that can sit comfortably within both vintage and contemporary interiors.

Note/Disclaimer:
Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.
Transport & Handling Note:
All items are carefully wrapped and prepared for transport by us (not the courier) to ensure safe handling. Once items leave our premises, we cannot take responsibility for their treatment by third-party transporters. We strongly recommend arranging goods-in-transit insurance for comprehensive protection.
Due to the fragility of glass, we do not recommend shipping glass items outside of Gauteng.
