This refined mid-century sideboard in richly toned Kiaat is a classic example of South African modernist design by John Tabraham for Kallenbach, produced during the 1960s. Tabraham’s work is widely respected for its disciplined lines, thoughtful proportions, and exceptional build quality, all of which are evident in this piece.

A defining feature of this piece is the pair of tambour doors, which glide open and closed effortlessly via recessed handles. The tambour mechanism rolls smoothly into the back of the cabinet and remains completely concealed from the interior, preserving a clean and uncluttered look inside while showcasing the technical sophistication of the design.

The sideboard offers a well-considered storage layout, comprising three drawers on one side, including a dedicated cutlery drawer at the top, with cabinet storage and a generous cabinet on the other. Storage is ample yet visually restrained, allowing the design to remain calm and balanced.

The proportions are particularly versatile, with a height that lends itself equally well to use as a sideboard or as a media or TV unit. Clean architectural lines, warm timber tones, and subtle detailing ensure this piece integrates easily into a wide range of interiors, from classic mid-century settings to more contemporary spaces.

Elegant, practical, and enduring, this sideboard is a strong example of John Tabraham’s contribution to South African design history and a timeless addition to any interior.

Note/Disclaimer:

Our images form part of the item/s description. Although every effort is made to refurbish our furniture to represent its original state best, it must be noted that most of the items we source date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. For this reason, and although restored, signs of their vintage condition & age might still be visible. We will normally point out any visible/notable concerns. Take note of all photos or view the item in-store prior to purchasing.

As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
