A rare and beautifully refined Mid-Century dining set by John Tabraham for Kallenbach, crafted in richly grained Sapele Mahogany. This iconic set comprises an elegant, sharply oval dining table and six matching chairs - each thoughtfully designed to reflect the clean lines and minimalist sophistication of the era.
The table features a striking black steel underframe with a sculptural wooden base and central stretcher, all resting on solid brass leveling feet - a design innovation that places Tabraham among the few South African makers to incorporate metal detailing for a more modernist expression.
Perfectly suited as a six-seater yet easily accommodating up to eight guests (see reference photos attached), this piece combines form and function with understated elegance. The wood has been meticulously restored - stripped, sanded, and sealed - revealing the warm luster of the Sapele grain. The table remains in excellent vintage condition, with minimal visible wear.
Note: Two additional chairs that were made by DS Vorster & Co are paired here and work very well with the overall set. They have been upholstered in the same fabric, so it will seamlessly integrate with the set. They are available to be purchased separately here.
DS Vorster and Tabraham pieces often complement each other, as they frequently drew from similar design influences and shared stylistic elements
The chairs are refined in silhouette, offering a stylish and comfortable seating experience. Their lighter frame lends an air of delicacy, and while beautifully designed, may not be suited to those preferring a more robust construction. Each has been reupholstered in a sophisticated, textured Hertex fabric, adding a contemporary finish to their timeless form.
Well-preserved, large-scale Mid-Century dining sets of this caliber are increasingly hard to come by, making this not only a functional centrepiece but a worthy investment in design history.

As with most Mid-Century pieces, it is a good combination of solid wood and a high-quality wood veneer. The history of veneer on furniture is a long and honorable tradition, and it depends on the veneer's artistry, condition, and thickness the quality of the old veneer was long-lasting; for this reason, it can be retouched or sanded and refinished.
