A rare and exceptionally practical mid-century treasure, this folding Murphy bed is cleverly housed within a beautiful wooden cabinet featuring smooth tambour doors. The wood is in great overall condition and the steel bed frame and spring system are in excellent vintage condition, retaining the sturdy functionality that made these pieces a hallmark of smart mid-century living.
The mattress is the original Edblo spring system “Rollaway”, impressively preserved for its age. It shows some expected marks and graceful aging, but remains usable. A mattress protector is included, especially for those who appreciate keeping the original set intact, which is recommended given its collectability. If need be, an additional mattress topper can easily be added for extra comfort for your guests if you prefer.
The inner back board of the cabinet shows a small area of damage, as pictured along with minor areas of wear inside the cabinet, grazing marks.
The Murphy bed was invented in the early 1900s by William Lawrence Murphy, an American who devised a folding bed system to maximize space in his small San Francisco apartment. His patented design allowed a full bed to pivot or lift vertically into a cabinet, instantly converting a bedroom into a living area. By the mid-20th century, Murphy beds had become popular in compact city apartments and later appeared in stylish mid-century homes around the world, admired for their clever engineering and multipurpose practicality.
This cabinet-bed combination reflects that same philosophy: elegant, space-saving design paired with thoughtful craftsmanship — a true collectible that remains wonderfully functional today.
