A design classic from circa 1950, this mid-century art vintage print of The Chinese Girl by Vladimir Tretchikoff is known for its vibrant hues and striking composition, this iconic portrait, often referred to as the 'Green Lady,' features the subject’s distinctive blue-green skin tones, which contrast with her elegant traditional Chinese dress. Displaying a unique blend of realism and surrealism, this artwork continues to capture attention and serves as a conversation starter, adding timeless character to both modern and vintage-inspired interiors.

According to the official Tretchikoff website: "Chinese Girl is Tretchikoff’s most well-known and celebrated work. It is one of the highest-selling, and most reproduced prints of the 20th century and its allure has endured. Tretchikoff was able to capture a universal notion of Chinese womanhood. The painting captures the exotic charm of a young Chinese woman, distinctively characterised by an unconventional blue-green skin tone, earning its colloquial title, 'The Green Lady'.".

The girl in the painting is based on Monika Sing-Lee, who was working in her uncle's launderette in Cape Town when Tretchikoff saw her and asked her to model for him.

Tretchikoff was a self-taught artist who painted realistic figures, portraits, still life, and animals, with subjects often inspired by his early life in China and Malaysia, and later life in South Africa. Tretchikoff's work was immensely popular with the general public, but is often seen by art critics as the epitome of kitsch (he was nicknamed the "King of Kitsch"). He worked in oil, watercolor, ink, charcoal, and pencil but is best known for his reproduction prints, which are sold worldwide in huge numbers. The reproductions were so popular that it was said Tretchikoff was second only to Picasso in his popularity.

The frame has some markings of wear - but the print is in excellent condition.

57.5cm W X 5cm D X 68.5cm H (Dimensions of the Framed artwork)

Research shows that excellent vintage prints can sell for up to R7000.
