A superb example of South African mid-century furniture by DS Vorster & Co., this well proportioned sideboard combines substantial storage with an elegant, finely detailed design. Crafted in Sapele mahogany, the restoration has brought out the timber’s rich warm colouring and particularly attractive grain across the doors and drawer fronts.
The layout features three wide central drawers, flanked by two spacious cupboards, each fitted with internal shelving. The top drawer retains its fitted divided cutlery section. The side cupboards offer generous storage for glassware, crockery, bottles or serving pieces, making this a particularly practical piece for a dining or living space.
A lovely detail is the set of original sculptural brass handles, their shallow circular form adding just enough contrast against the mahogany. The long tapered legs, shaped side stretchers and gently curved lower rail give this substantial sideboard a lighter, elevated appearance.
DS Vorster & Co. was a respected South African furniture manufacturer associated with well made domestic furniture during the mid 20th century. Their pieces are increasingly sought after for their quality timber, craftsmanship and distinctly South African interpretation of modern furniture design.
Condition:
The sideboard has been fully restored, with the timber stripped, sanded and resealed to revive the Sapele mahogany grain and colour. The original brass handles have been retained and cleaned- with only one showing some wear. Overall, it presents in excellent restored vintage condition, with minor age related wear consistent with its history.
