A beautiful, John Tabraham for Kallenbach, extendable Sapele Mahogany dining table. It has black steel supports with a wooden leg base and center support.
This local furniture maker was renowned for high-quality work and typical Mid-Century furniture. He was one of two designers in SA that used a steel combination on the legs to modernize the design. This table was in all probability influenced by DS Vorster.
This 8-seater extends to seat 10 people comfortably and the extension folds away neatly underneath the table. The wood was fully restored (stripped, sanded, and sealed) and the table is in very good vintage condition with very few marks visible showing it's age and wear.
Hard to find these mid-century, large tables, so a good investment.

As with most Mid-Century pieces, it is a good combination of solid wood and a high-quality wood veneer. The quality, old veneer was long-lasting and for this reason, it can be retouched or sanded and refinished. The history of veneer on furniture is a long and honorable tradition, and it depends on the workmanship, condition, and thickness of the veneer itself.
