This striking ceramic ashtray is a vivid example of mid-century Italian studio pottery, defined by its bold colour palette, tactile surface, and sculptural form. The piece features a thick, rounded rim with two integrated rests, framing a richly glazed interior decorated with an abstract pinwheel motif in turquoise, red, black, and mossy green tones.
The glaze work is highly expressive, with a speckled, almost volcanic texture to the outer surface, contrasting beautifully with the glossy, graphic interior. This interplay of matte and shine, texture and colour, gives the ashtray a strong visual presence even when used purely as a decorative object.
The base is stamped “Italy” and bears a hand-written studio mark and date notation, indicating individual production rather than mass manufacture.
