This is more than décor — it’s a snapshot of a cultural moment, a gathering call to Afrikaans speakers, captured on a bold poster format. A conversation piece...
This striking poster features the iconic Afrikaans television personality Johan Stemmet, known for decades as the face of the long-running music quiz show Noot vir Noot. The bold headline ‘GOODBYE AFRIKAANS’ and sub-text ‘PROTEST MEETING — VANDAG, MORE, SAAM’ indicate a cultural-heritage gathering, challenging the future of the Afrikaans language and identity at a moment of change in South Africa.
The design combines protest-poster aesthetics (strong red/black/white palette, bold typography, musical keyboard graphic) with a familiar cultural figure, bridging pop-culture nostalgia with civic resonance. The small print references ‘161 Main Street’ and an art gallery address, suggesting the meeting may have been both a public forum and exhibition event.
For collectors of South African vernacular ephemera, Africana décor with a cultural story, this poster is a conversation piece: it speaks of language, identity, music, and community, wrapped in a visually arresting layout.
