This magnificent mid-century dining suite is a rare and striking example of South African design excellence. It masterfully balances craftsmanship with modernist elegance — a hallmark of the country’s finest furniture of the era. Though crafted in the 1960s, the suite retains a distinctly contemporary presence, embodying a timeless appeal that offers both functional elegance and collectible value
The round dining table is beautifully proportioned, crafted from rich Sapele Mahogany with deep, warm tones and a refined grain pattern. Its solid four-star pedestal base not only ensures stability but also lends a sculptural presence, making it a commanding centrepiece in any dining setting.
Accompanying the table are six fully restored dining chairs, defined by clean angular lines and a distinctly mid-century silhouette. Each chair features a subtly curved backrest with an upholstered panel for added comfort and visual contrast. The seats have also been reupholstered in a volcanic charcoal fabric — a dark, textured weave that gives the suite a sophisticated modern edge, while enhancing the warmth of the mahogany frames.
Based on the design lines, this suite can be attributed to DS Vorster & Co., one of South Africa’s most celebrated mid-century furniture makers. Their work is renowned for its craftsmanship and elegance, most notably seen in their furnishing of the interiors of the legendary Blue Train — a lasting symbol of luxury and refinement.

Note/Disclaimer:
Our images form part of the item/s description. Although every effort is made to refurbish our furniture to represent its original state best, it must be noted that most of the items we source date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. For this reason, and although restored, signs of their vintage condition & age might still be visible. We will normally point out any visible/notable concerns. Take note of all photos or view the item in-store prior to purchasing.
As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
