Rare 1960s, UK sideboard with a fabulous wood grain. This elegant Mid-Century sideboard was by renowned furniture maker, Alfred Cox, who notably produced high-quality, hand-built furniture known for using exotic woods, and supplied high-end retailers like Heals of London and other upmarket department stores during the 1950s and 1960s. Notice the elegant leg base. Some parts of this piece seem to contain Tiger Wood, Tola Wood and /or Walnut.

Alfred Cox, a British designer of hand-built furniture known for using exotic woods, established his company in 1956 and supplied high-end retailers such as Heals of London.

This stunning sideboard is no exception and a testament to the fine craftmanship this maker was known for. It features four drawers and two doors that provide fantastic tiered storage space. The sideboard bears the Alfred Cox ‘AC’ maker’s mark and the ‘Handcraft Quality Furniture’ badge on one door. Each curved handle is marked, Made in England. Some parts of this piece seem to also contain Tiger Wood,

We have carefully restored & refurbished this piece to preserve the heritage. It came out beautifully with one mark top left, not very noticeable overall due to the variation in the walnut grain.

Original handles as far as possible, however, one curved handle was unfortunately not intact. We opted to keep in line with the original look of the cabinet door handles and replaced the top drawer handles & cabinet door handles with solid brass mid-century handles to create a seamless look.

Take note of all photos or view the item in-store prior to purchasing.

As with most Mid-Century pieces, it is a good combination of solid wood and a high-quality wood veneer. The history of veneer on furniture is a long and honorable tradition, and it depends on the veneer's artistry, condition, and thickness the quality of the old veneer was long-lasting; for this reason, it can be retouched or sanded and refinished.
