This beautifully balanced double bed headboard with integrated pedestals is a refined example of South African furniture design from the modernist era, crafted in richly grained Kiaat and now fully restored to its best possible standard. The warm, honeyed tones of the wood highlight the quality of the craftsmanship, while the clean, horizontal lines give the set a strong architectural presence within the bedroom.
The extended headboard creates a sense of visual flow across the width of the bed, softened by a newly upholstered deep charcoal/black textured panel. This updated detail adds comfort and depth while remaining sympathetic to the original design language of the piece.
The attached pedestals are well proportioned and practical, each featuring a drawer with its original pull and an open shelf below for easy bedside storage.
During restoration, earlier surface damage to the underside of the pedestal tops was identified, resulting in a slightly uneven surface when viewed at certain angles. To ensure long term durability, custom-cut glass tops were added. This protective layer prevents further wear while introducing a subtle contemporary contrast that complements the rich timber tones.
Fully restored, structurally sound, and thoughtfully finished, this Kiaat bedroom set is a cohesive and characterful piece, ideal for interiors that appreciate timeless design, honest materials, and furniture made to last.

As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
