These sculptural retro rocking chairs, often referred to as Fondue Chairs, are a striking embodiment of late 1960s – 1970s Space Age design. With their smooth, pod-like silhouettes and low-slung, ergonomic form, they capture the era’s fascination with futuristic aesthetics, playful organic shapes, and the radical use of new materials.
Originally, these were designed by Wolfgang Feierbach, a visionary German designer and engineer, and these chairs were produced under his firm FG Design, founded in Altenstadt, Germany in the mid-1960s. Feierbach was renowned for pushing the boundaries of furniture design through his innovative use of fiberglass and plastics, creating bold and sculptural pieces that doubled as functional art.
Crafted from fiberglass, each chair sits on an extremely heavy, weighted base, offering excellent stability while allowing a gentle rocking motion. The chairs have been newly upholstered in a rich, high-quality, navy blue, textured fabric, which provides a soft, tactile contrast to the sleek shell - balancing retro charm with modern comfort and durability.
These chairs weren’t merely designed to be sat in; they were meant to be experienced - a reflection of the optimistic, boundary-pushing spirit of the Space Age. The two chairs are available for purchase either as a pair or individually. They are nearly identical, with only a slight variation in the height of the bases and overall height. Though this is barely noticeable overall - one chair (chair 2) has had a previous fiberglass repair, resulting in a very minor gap between the upholstery and the shell.
Both chairs have been reupholstered with brand-new foam and quality fabric and have also been resprayed for a refreshed finish. Please note that while they are heavy, they can be swiveled around once positioned. Unmarked like many vintage items.
