A beautiful Mid-Century extendable Sapele Mahogany dining table. It has steel supports with a wooden leg base and center support.
This local furniture maker was renowned for high-quality work and typical Mid-Century furniture. Most likely with the influence of John Tabraham who was one of two designers in SA that used a steel combination on the legs to modernize the design.
When not extended and dependent on chair size it seats 8 comfortably and extends to seat 10 people comfortably (dependant on chair size). The extension folds away neatly underneath the table. The wood was fully restored (stripped, sanded, and sealed) and the table is in very good vintage condition with very few marks visible showing its age and wear. It seems some of the steelwork underneath the table has been upgraded.
Hard to find these mid-century, large tables, so a good investment.

As with most Mid-Century pieces, it is a good combination of solid wood and a high-quality wood veneer. The history of veneer on furniture is a long and honorable tradition, and it depends on the veneer's artistry, condition, and thickness the quality of the old veneer was long-lasting; for this reason, it can be retouched or sanded and refinished.
