A striking and highly versatile freestanding modular wall unit | room divider, strongly reminiscent of the celebrated Danish designs of Erik Buch. Comprising three bays with a considered mix of storage, shelving, and display space, it can be reconfigured to suit a variety of interiors and functions.
Several design characteristics align closely with the highly regarded modular shelving and wall systems attributed to Danish designer Erik Buch during the 1960s. These include the sculptural tapered A-frame uprights, fully finished floating cabinet modules, adjustable shelving positions, and the light visual footprint that allows the piece to function beautifully within an open plan interior.
While the recessed door pulls differ slightly from those seen on documented examples, the overall proportions, construction methods, modular configuration, and design aesthetic remain remarkably consistent with Buch's work and the broader Danish modern design language of the period. The absence of a maker's mark or label means a definitive attribution cannot be made. However, based on available research and comparison with known examples, this piece strongly reflects the design principles and visual characteristics associated with Erik Buch and related Danish manufacturers of the era.
The design features:
-
Three lower cabinet modules incorporating a combination of deep drawers and sliding door cupboards, providing ample storage for dining, lounge, office, or bar essentials. The 'sit' effortlessly on the lower frame.
- Dimensions: 90cm W x 45.5cm D x 49.5cm H
- A suspended upper cabinet with sliding doors, offering practical concealed storage while maintaining the unit's clean architectural lines.
- Dimensions: 90cm W x 30cm D x 37cm H
-
Two open shelves framed by the sculptural uprights, creating generous display space for books, ceramics, art, and collectibles.
- Dimensions: 90cm W x 30cm D x 2cm H
One of its most appealing features is that the rear is as beautifully finished. Unlike many wall units intended to sit against a wall, this example was designed to be viewed from all angles, making it equally effective as a room divider within a larger living space, studio, office or open plan interior.
The timber has been carefully revived to enhance its warmth and grain. The piece remains structurally sound throughout.
A highly functional and visually impressive Danish modern-style room divider, offering storage, display, and architectural presence in equal measure.
Condition:
The unit has been restored with care, while preserving the patina and character it has acquired over the years. It presents well following restoration. The original green felt lining within the drawer organiser shows a small tear, and a minor scratch remains visible on the top of the drawer cabinet module, along with minor wear here and there consistent with age and use. These are minor points to note and are outweighed by the overall quality, condition, and rarity of the piece.
These minor imperfections are reflected in the pricing and remain consistent with a vintage piece of this age and rarity.

Total dimensions: 284cm W x 45.5cm D x 208cm H

As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
