A rare and beautifully restored couch and daybed by DS Vorster & Co, crafted in solid Kiaat and representative of the company’s celebrated South African mid century production. Renowned for their honest joinery, architectural detailing and robust timber construction, Vorster produced several variations of this iconic design, including versions both with and without a backrest - click the link to view and purchase the other daybed we have as per some of the photos - see link. They make a fantastic pair.

This is an exceptional example for collectors and admirers of South African modernist design.

The piece showcases the rich grain and sculptural refinement typical of Vorster’s work. The solid Kiaat frame is defined by strong horizontal timber supports that form both a visual rhythm and a structural foundation for the design. The exposed ends of the solid wood are finished with great care, shaped and softened in a manner that gives the timber an almost sculpted presence while preserving the clarity and strength of the overall form.

The seat cushion is newly made using high density foam, selected for durability and long term performance. Upholstered in a warm pale gold fabric that is soft to the touch, the upholstery complements the natural warmth of the Kiaat.
Two scatter cushions accompany the piece, each finished in matching pale gold on one side and a soft touch geometric patterned textile from Hertex on the reverse, allowing flexibility for added comfort or styling. it’s a fi
rm sit, to ensure it meets the needs of a daybed/ sleeping solution or couch.

Designed with versatility in mind, it functions effortlessly as a daybed, bench style couch, reading nook seat, refined entryway bench or occasional guest sleeping solution. Its clean proportions and low architectural profile allow it to sit comfortably in both contemporary and vintage inspired interiors.

An investment worthy example of mid century South African craftsmanship that is at once functional, sculptural and timeless.

For Airbnb and holiday homes, they are a standout choice beautiful enough to anchor a room, robust enough for frequent use and invaluable as additional sleeping options for guests.

Condition:

Fully restored and beautifully finished. The foam has been intentionally selected with a firmer sit to support the piece’s multiple uses, offering better structure for seating and sleeping. It will naturally relax slightly over time while retaining its supportive comfort.
