An iconic Kartell “Portabiancheria” Model 4984 laundry bin, designed by Anna Castelli Ferrieri in the late 1960s / early 1970s. Made from injection moulded ABS plastic, the design reflects the Space Age approach of the period, combining a practical everyday object with the clean, sculptural forms for which Kartell became known.
The bin features a distinctive tilt-out front compartment, allowing easy access to laundry while keeping the contents neatly concealed. The top also functions as a removable lid, which lifts off easily for direct access to the laundry bin from above. Its softly curved profile and integrated oval handle give it a streamlined appearance, making it equally suited to a bathroom, bedroom or dressing area.
A little history: Anna Castelli Ferrieri was one of the pioneering figures of post-war Italian design and a long-standing collaborator with Kartell. Her work helped establish plastic as a serious material for modern furniture and household design. The Portabiancheria shares the practical, modular thinking and moulded-plastic construction associated with her celebrated Componibili storage designs, turning a purely functional household item into a recognisable piece of Italian design.
Condition:
In good vintage condition, with age-related wear consistent with the nature of vintage plastic. There is some discoloration visible on both sides when the laundry door compartment is slid open, along with some markings and surface wear to the top. Two fixing caps have been added to help secure the tilt-out compartment and prevent it from falling open unintentionally, and to ensure the slide-open mechanism functions correctly.
