A distinctive South African-made dining suite, attributed to Frystark Furniture, and dating to circa the 1960s, with a strong influence from Danish modern design. The set comprises a rectangular dining table and six matching dining chairs.
A standout feature is the repeated sculpted timber detailing. The shaped detail beneath the tabletop is echoed in the sweeping curves of the chair frames, visually tying the suite together. Viewed from the back, the chairs are especially striking, with their tapered uprights creating a distinctive A-frame profile around the upholstered backrests and solid brass screw covers.
The wood throughout has been fully restored and refinished, bringing out its rich grain and warm tone. The chairs retain their original black vinyl upholstery, which remains in good vintage condition with only minor signs of age and use.
The suite is crafted in Kiaat, and while we initially considered Novocraft as a possible maker, further research points more strongly towards Frystark. No maker’s markings are present, based on its construction, distinctive design details, and similarities to known South African Frystark furniture of the period.
Breaking it down, the chairs work out to roughly R2680 per chair and the table to R7800.
Condition:
Great restored condition, and the black vinyl is still in good condition, with very minor signs of wear here and there. It's rare for the original vinyl to still be in overall good condition.
