An exceptional example of Danish furniture design from the 1960s. This original Grete Jalk coffee table, manufactured by Glostrup Møbelfabrik in Denmark, is a piece where the craftsmanship is just as impressive as the design itself.
Crafted in teak, its elongated surfboard-shaped top features softly tapered ends and finely bevelled edges, creating a flowing silhouette that is unmistakably Scandinavian. Below, a beautifully integrated magazine shelf with discreet brass inlay detailing adds another layer of craftsmanship, while the slender tapered legs complete its elegant proportions.
The original Glostrup manufacturer's label remains intact underneath, confirming its authenticity and provenance. A remarkable original by one of Denmark's most respected furniture designers, with the details that make it so special still in place. Examples of this exact model sell internationally for prices ranging up to and exceeding R40,000.
Grete Jalk (1920–2006) was one of the pioneering women of Danish modern design. Trained under the legendary Kaare Klint, she became internationally recognised for her innovative approach to furniture design. Her work earned a place in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, cementing her legacy among Denmark’s most influential designers.
Condition:
The table has undergone careful restoration, reviving the warmth and rich grain of the teak while respecting its original character. A section of veneer on one corner of the tabletop required repair, a particularly delicate and challenging restoration process. While traces of the repair remain visible, the table presents well overall, with no impact on the structural integrity of this rare piece - it has been sympathetically integrated into the finish, preserving the overall appeal of this collectible Danish design. As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
