This medium-sized sideboard by McNamee is a beautifully balanced example of South African craftsmanship, combining clean modern lines with warm materiality. Crafted and finished in oak, the piece has been fully restored to highlight the natural grain and soft honey tones of the wood. Great example of forward-thinking design.

The upper section features three drawers fitted with their detailed and original circular drawer handles, a subtle graphic detail that adds rhythm and authenticity to the façade. Below, black smoky perspex-style sliding doors introduce a darker contrast, offering a refined semi-opaque finish that gently conceals the interior while still allowing light to move through the piece. The sliding doors are finished with solid wood pulls, shaped simply and confidently to sit comfortably in the hand.

Inside, the generous space makes this sideboard highly versatile. It works equally well as a drinks cabinet, media unit, or refined storage piece in a dining or living space. The slender legs and gently rounded edges keep the overall form light and elegant, allowing it to sit comfortably in both contemporary and vintage led interiors.

McNamee was a respected South African furniture manufacturer based in Durban and Pietermaritzburg, known for producing high-quality modern furniture from the 1950s through to the 1970s. Their work is recognised for its excellent joinery, thoughtful proportions, and commitment to durable local hardwoods. Pieces bearing the McNamee name are increasingly sought after for their understated design language and enduring build quality.

A timeless and practical sideboard that reflects the strength of South African mid-century design, restored with care and ready for everyday use.

Note/Disclaimer:

Our images form part of the item/s description. Although every effort is made to refurbish our furniture to represent its original state best, it must be noted that most of the items we source date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. For this reason, and although restored, signs of their vintage condition & age might still be visible. We will normally point out any visible/notable concerns. All items are carefully wrapped and prepared for transport by us (not the courier) to ensure safe handling. Once items leave our premises, we cannot take responsibility for their treatment by third-party transporters. We strongly recommend arranging goods-in-transit insurance for comprehensive protection.

As with many Mid-Century pieces, this item features a thoughtful combination of solid wood and high-quality wood veneer. Veneer has a long and respected tradition in furniture making, valued for both its aesthetic and structural benefits. When crafted with skill and applied in substantial thickness, vintage veneer proves highly durable, allowing for careful restoration, including retouching, sanding, and refinishing without compromising the integrity of the piece.
