A striking spindle-back armchair, produced by Lubis Furniture during the 1960s. Its sweeping back rail, fine vertical spindles, splayed legs and distinctive curved armrests give the chair an exceptionally light and graceful profile.
The design shares a clear visual language with the celebrated Ercol spindle back furniture produced internationally during the same period. Rather than overpowering the chair, the slender oak and elm timber framework is its defining feature, with the curved crest rail and gently flared arms giving it character from every angle.
For the upholstery, we deliberately kept the treatment simple so that the spindle work remains visible. A newly upholstered, generously cushioned seat in a restrained green foliage textured Hertex fabric is paired with a loose back scatter cushion in a contrasting warm mustard yellow, also from Hertex. Dark piping around the scatter cushion ties the two fabrics together and gives the upholstery a crisp finishing detail.
A wonderful combination of sculptural timber work, comfort and colour, this is a chair that deserves to be seen from all sides. Equally at home as a statement occasional chair, reading chair or part of a relaxed living space, it is a distinctive example of South African 1960s furniture design with enduring appeal.
Condition:
The timber frame has been fully restored, stripped and refinished to bring back its warm, natural tone and grain, before being protected with a non-yellowing sealant. Structural work was also undertaken where required, ensuring the chair is sturdy and ready to be enjoyed again. New fabric and upholstered cushioning were added.

Note/Disclaimer:
Our images form part of the item description. While we make every effort to restore our furniture to its original state, most pieces date from the 1950s to the late 1970s. As a result, and despite restoration, signs of their vintage nature and previous life may still be visible. Light traces of restoration may remain visible, consistent with authentic vintage furniture. In some cases, minor adjustments may also have been made during the restoration process to ensure the piece remains functional and usable. We will point out any notable aspects where possible. We encourage in-store viewing or careful review of photographs before purchase.
