A substantial Artecasa sideboard in solid Kiaat, designed by the Italian Maraschino brothers in Johannesburg. The warm variation and expressive grain of the timber are particularly evident across the doors and drawer fronts, giving this piece plenty of character while retaining Artecasa’s clean, practical design.
A standout detail is the corner-cut, framed effect running around the front of the sideboard. The subtly angled edges create a defined border around the cabinetry, adding depth and definition to the otherwise simple rectangular form. This detailing continues along the top edge and gives the piece a particularly well-finished appearance when viewed from an angle. The back of the sideboard is just as attractive, unlike many other sideboards.
Storage is thoughtfully arranged, with two large cabinet doors opening to storage with solid wood shelving, alongside three drawers of varying depths. Two drawers are fitted for cutlery, while the deeper lower drawer provides useful additional storage. Recessed wooden handles sit neatly within the drawer and door fronts, maintaining the uncluttered appearance.
The sideboard is also finished at the back rather than intended purely to sit against a wall. This makes it particularly versatile and allows it to be positioned centrally in a larger room, where it could equally serve as a room divider or freestanding storage piece.
A generously proportioned and thoughtfully designed piece of South African furniture, combining excellent storage with distinctive detailing and the quality of construction associated with Artecasa. This one will last another 60 years.
Condition:
In very good restored condition. The Kiaat has been fully restored, stripped, carefully sanded, and repaired where required before being resealed to bring out the natural colour and grain of the timber while preparing it for continued everyday use. Very minor signs of previous life here and there, consistent with age and use.
