This rare and historically significant Tretchikoff: Colour Prints exhibition catalogue was published in 1952 by Howard Timmins to accompany Vladimir Tretchikoff’s landmark exhibition at Stuttafords Galleries, one of South Africa’s most prominent retail gallery spaces of the era. Featuring a foreword by Leslie Richfield, the catalogue presents a striking selection of Tretchikoff’s most iconic early colour works in a distinctive ring-bound format, reflecting the accessible, popular appeal of his art at the time.
This particular copy is notable for several exceptional inclusions:
-
An original artist's signature on the front cover
-
A loose-leaf souvenir insert titled Tretchikoff Souvenir Catalogue — also signed by the artist
-
Full-colour print reproductions with insightful commentary contextualizing Tretchikoff’s style, influences, and theatrical aesthetic
About Leslie Richfield: In the 1950s South African art and media landscape, Leslie Richfield was a prominent art critic and columnist, known for his accessible and enthusiastic promotion of visual arts through newspapers and gallery writing. His foreword in this catalogue positions Tretchikoff as a “people’s artist” and reflects Richfield’s support of art that resonated with the broader public — a viewpoint often in contrast with the elite fine-art circles of the time. Richfield’s commentary helped bridge the gap between high art and mass appeal, and he played a pivotal role in elevating Tretchikoff’s status during his South African rise.
Condition:
While the ring binding shows some bending and edge wear, and there is age-related discolouration on the cover. The wear is consistent for a piece from 1952. The inclusion of two original Tretchikoff autographs significantly enhances the collectible value of this edition.
