An iconic Mid-Century Pod Armchair, designed by Walter S Cheney for Lurashell. We have to assume (as the label is no longer intact) that these were produced in the 1960s by the celebrated South African maker Frystark. Originally known as the Antoinette by Frystark, it remains one of the most recognisable local designs of the era.
The sculptural fiberglass outer shell has been updated, giving the form sharp clarity again. The chair rests on its classic half-moon beechwood base, a signature detail that grounds the bold pod shape.
Now fully reupholstered in a richly textured, high-end Hertex fabric mixed hues of green, black, chartreuse, and off-while (Forest), the seat feels both contemporary and true to the gentle curves of the original design. The fabric retails in excess of R1000 per meter. A beautifully restored piece that celebrates the craftsmanship and design legacy of Frystark.
Condition:
Restored, upholstered, and in great condition, ready to bring new life to its next home. Some minor imperfections on the outer shells remain here and there, but they are present in great condition nonetheless. A striking set of chairs. The outer shells are finished with a subtle sheen, with a gentle variation in finish between the two pieces.
