This particular portrayal became one of the most widely circulated Christian images of the mid-twentieth century. Its soft realism and devotional mood made it one of the era’s most recognisable spiritual prints.
Artist Warner Sallman (1892–1968) was an American illustrator best known for creating some of the most widely recognised devotional images of the twentieth century. His portraits of Christ, especially Head of Christ (1940), became iconic across churches, homes, and religious publications worldwide. Sallman’s work blended gentle realism with a warm, comforting presence, which helped his images become enduring symbols of Faith.
